This classic recipe is updated with a delicious streusel nut topping! Enjoy for breakfast with coffee or as an afternoon treat with tea.

For the Streusel Nut Topping:

  • 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

For the Banana Nut Bread:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

Make the Streusel Nut Topping:

  1. In small bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon with a fork.
  2. Add melted butter, mixing with fork until well-combined.
  3. Add nuts and stir with fork until well-combined; set aside.

Make the Banana Nut Bread:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Grease 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan with canola oil; set aside.
  3. In large mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  4. Make a well in the center of the mixture and set aside.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat eggs.
  6. Add mashed bananas, sugar and oil and mix well to combine.
  7. Add banana mixture to well in flour mixture and stir until combined; mixture will be lumpy.
  8. Fold in nuts.
  9. Spoon into prepared loaf pan and sprinkle with streusel topping.
  10. Bake 55 to 60 minutes, but check at 40 minutes and if topping is browning too quickly, cover loosely with foil for the remainder of the cooking time.
  11. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes.
  12. Remove from pan and wrap in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil.
  13. Store overnight before slicing.
