Hot Fudge Cutie Pies are a “leftover” recipe! In other words, I used ingredients I already had on hand.
Last December (yes, I know this is August!), I overdid it on buying ice cream toppings for my Ice Cream Sundae Dessert Buffet. I overestimated how much my family would eat (although my very slender sister, Gail, ate her fair share when she downed 3 of them!) and I was left with an almost full jar of hot fudge topping as well as the other toppings.
And, I know this is shocking, but by summer, Charlie and I had not finished that jar of hot fudge! We try to keep ice cream out of the house except for special occasions, so I hadn’t bought much ice cream since Christmas, thus leaving the hot fudge sauce still languishing in the frig all by its lonesome self. And, I still had Cool Whip setting in a tub waiting to be used.
Since I’m a firm believer of using what I have, using it all up whenever possible to lessen waste AND using products before they expire, I’ll periodically look through my pantry to see what’s there that should be used soon.
- Hot Fudge in the bottom of the mini graham cracker pie crust
- Pudding on top
Anyway, enough from the soap box…
I also had a package of mini graham cracker pie crusts and after digging around, I found a box of instant vanilla pudding. But, I didn’t want to make vanilla cutie pies with chocolate topping, I wanted to make chocolate cutie pies! So, I mixed unsweetened cocoa powder in with the instant vanilla pudding mix and, voila’, Hot Fudge Cutie Pies were born {grin}!
I’m sharing this recipe on my blog to show readers that with a little bit of creativity, you can mix and match leftovers and products approaching their expiration dates (“use by” dates) and make something delicious and comforting.
Or, if you want to make this from scratch, buy the ingredients you need, but substitute chocolate pudding for the vanilla pudding and leave out the unsweetened cocoa powder. I’m sure you’ll get the same delectable results.
You’ll notice, too, that my mini chocolate chips look a little tired and appear almost whitish. That’s because, they too, were leftover from Christmas! Just keeping it real {grin}!
