Easy to make with a few ingredients, this chocolate frosting recipe is a keeper!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered (confectioner’s) sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick butter (1/2 cup), softened to room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup heavy cream (depending on desired consistency)

Instructions

  1. Measure powdered sugar, cocoa powder and salt into a small mixing bowl.
  2. Mix together gently with a wire whisk until well-combined.
  3. Add butter to a separate large mixing bowl and beat with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy.
  4. Reduce speed and add vanilla, mixing well.
  5. Add powdered sugar/cocoa mixture a cup at a time, along with a few tablespoons of heavy cream, and mix well.
  6. Scrape down sides of bowl with a rubber spatula and add a few more tablespoons of heavy cream.
  7. Increase speed of electric mixer to medium and continue beating frosting until fluffy and creamy.
  8. Add more cream, if needed, until reaching desired consistency.

Notes

I used all 3/4 cup of heavy cream for this recipe. For a stiffer frosting for piping onto cupcakes, add heavy cream by tablespoons, beating until well-combined until desired consistency is reached. Makes enough frosting for one 9″ x 13″ cake or one 2-layer round cake or 24 cupcakes.
