Teeny Tiny Christmas Caramel Apples

Print Recipe

Christmas Caramel Apples cover

Christmas Caramel Apples are tiny, itty bitty treats.  Perfect for a “small plate” dessert presentation and easy to make!

I bought these Christmas apples at my local grocery store.  You can read more about them in my earlier post, Christmas Apples.  Also known as Lady Apples, the information online suggested that they weren’t necessarily good to eat!

But, I decided to taste one…

And, they were actually quite good!

So, rather than attempting to do a dessert by baking or roasting them, I made them into Christmas Caramel Apples!

Here’s what you do:

Preparing the apples for Christmas Caramel Apples

  1. I’ve placed a Christmas apple beside a normal-size Red Delicious apple so that you can see the comparison.
  2. Wash you apples in cold, clean water.
  3. Dry your apples completely.
  4. Skewer the apples with wooden skewers.  These were 4 1/2 inches long for easy handling.
  5. Close-up of skewered Christmas Apple.
  6. Close-up of tip of skewer so that you can see the sharp point.  Even with a sharp point, inserting the skewer into the little apple took a bit of elbow grease!
  7. Next, get out a small sauce pot and your bag of caramels.
  8. Then, get out a tray of some sort.  I used a cookie sheet that I covered with wax paper AND sprayed with canola oil (I used my Misto).
  9. Unwrap the caramels and place in sauce pot.  This is the hardest part of this recipe – unwrapping all the little caramels.  You can make caramel sauce from scratch, if you’d rather.  I did that once.  Once.  It took an hour of constant stirring.  I just don’t have the patience.  But, it was absolutely the most delicious caramel I’ve ever had!  I suggest you enlist an elf to help unwrap the caramels.  I enlisted Charlie, although he looks more like Santa Claus than an elf.  I fired him after a few minutes because he was eating every other caramel he unwrapped! {grin}

Melting caramels for Christmas Caramel Apples

  1. Add 2 tablespoons of water to the caramels.  Heat on medium-low, stirring constantly.
  2. Caramels starting to melt.
  3. Caramels melting…this takes only a few minutes.
  4. Continue to stir and cook until all caramels are melted and mixture is smooth.  Remove from heat.

Dunking the Christmas Caramel Apples

  1. Using the skewer, dunk the apples in the melted caramel, twirling to cover all sides.
  2. Place each apple several inches apart on prepared cookie sheet.  This is where I screwed up!  The instructions on the caramel package say “let excess caramel drip off.  Scrape bottoms of apples; place on prepared plate.”  I DIDN’T SCRAPE THEIR LITTLE BOTTOMS {grin}.  OMG did I ever regret that faux pas!
  3. Refrigerator for 1 hour.  Remove apples from the refrigerator and allow to sit at room temperature for 15 minutes.  When I took them out of the refrigerator, I had a heck of a time getting them off of the paper!  I tried using a knife and ultimately had better results using this scraper!
  4. Yum!  They were delicious!  About 3 bites and you are done!  I ate two…

These pictures of my Christmas Caramel Apples were taken using mini hors d’oeuvre plates and a mini Christmas tree.  Plus, small gift boxes for staging.  That’s how tiny they are!
