That Charlie! He’s such a slacker! For this update, What Charlie Read in August 2013, I’m sorry to report he only read 5 books! After his astonishing performance in July (he read 10 books and he reviewed 9; he doesn’t review books that he doesn’t like), I’m surprised he only read 5 this month. What’s up with that?
In case you aren’t a regular follower of our blog, Charlie is my husband of 24 years. He’s retired and his favorite pastime is reading. You can read about his hobby and get caught up on previous book reviews by Charlie by clicking the links below:
He only reads hardback books and keeping him in books is a challenge. You can read about that in What Charlie Read in July 2013. And, since butterflies are a part of our logo, we use a butterfly rating system:
3 Butterflies = good; entertaining
4 Butterflies = very good; recommended read
5 Butterflies = excellent; definite read
So, here’s what Charlie read in August 2013:
The Mayan Secrets by Clive Cussler and Thomas Perry
Just released, this book, part of the Fargo series, takes place in Mexico and the wild jungles of Central America. Sam and Remi Fargo, a husband and wife team of adventurers, arrive in Mexico to help in aiding earthquake victims. They uncover the skeleton of a man holding a sealed pot with a Mayan book inside. This priceless book is filled with information about the Mayan empire and a scheming heiress stops at nothing to get the book and collect the treasure for herself. Clive Cussler is Charlie’s favorite author (see The Voracious Reader) and this book, filled with twists and turns and thrilling adventure, delivers. So it’s not a stretch that Charlie gives this story a rating of 5 Butterflies.
Robert B. Parker’s Damned If You Do by Michael Brandman
Set in Paradise, the locale of recurring character, Police Chief Jesse Stone, this book, too, is a new release. Jesse investigates the death of a young prostitute found in a seedy motel in Paradise. Caught in a turf was between two ruthless pimps, Jesse persists in his investigation ending in more bloodshed. Charlie thought this book was great (Robert B. Parker is one of Charlie’s favorite authors) and he gives this story a rating of 4 Butterflies.
Devil Bones by Kathy Reichs
Charlie loves the “Bones” television series on the Fox Network starring Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, so it’s not a stretch that he would enjoy Kathy Reichs books about the forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan, known as “Bones” to her friends and colleagues. Set in Charlotte, North Carolina, this gripping story is about deadly voodoo, Santeria, Wiccan, devil worship and revenge. Bones works to identify two young victims as plot twists provide surprising turns until the very end. Charlie gives this story 3 Butterflies.
Gone by Lisa Gardner
Ex-FBI profiler, Pierce Quincy’s estranged wife, Rainie Conner, is missing, gone, vanished. Working with his FBI agent daughter, Kimberly, they are running out of time to find her. One man knows where she is, but will not help. Written in 2006, the story takes place in Bakersville, Oregon (Tillamook County) and has Pierce knocking heads with local authorities as he frantically follows clues to find his wife. The first book by this author that Charlie has read, Charlie gives this book 3 Butterflies.
The Plan by Stephen J. Cannell
Written in 1995, this book was one of my resale store finds. Although this is the first book Charlie has read by Stephen J. Cannell, I thought he’d like it because he has enjoyed many of Stephen J. Cannell’s television series over the years (The Rockford Files, The A-Team, Silk Stalkings, The Greatest American Hero, to name a few). This story takes place in Washington D.C. and has the Mafia stealing the Presidency by secretly controlling a television network and running their puppet candidate for the highest office in the land. The story hero, Ryan Bolt, uncovers the plot when hired to do a documentary on the candidate. Power and corruption are at the heart of this story and Charlie gave this book a rating of 3 Butterflies.
What have you read this month? I didn’t read anything! Well, actually, that’s not really true. I didn’t read any books. But, I read lots and lots of articles, blog posts, etc. online and magazines {grin}! Love my magazines! Even the online ones like Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop…
