Vitamin Therapy

Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie

Yesterday was a “calcium overload” day.  I had Greek yogurt with my breakfast, cottage cheese at lunch with a small salad with a sprinkling of Feta cheese PLUS a scoop of macaroni salad with cheddar cheese chunks and a flatbread pizza for dinner, which of course had cheese on it.  Even though I had some form of food with calcium in it three times yesterday, did I reach the recommend daily about of calcium for someone my age?

Probably not.

Realizing this made me think about the amount of vitamins I am getting every day throughout this weight loss process.  Without a doubt, I am probably deficient in my calcium intact and yesterday’s overload was a complete fluke!

I already know that I am deficit in vitamin D.  I have been taking a vitamin D supplement for many years under my doctor’s advice and last year, she increased the level by another 1,000 IU’s a day.  This high level of vitamin D is what I take based on my doctor’s advice and certainly not a recommended dosage for everyone!

Why am I so deficit in vitamin D?  Because I don’t spend enough time outside – seriously.  Apparently, 15 minutes a day in the sun is not enough for me {grin}!

I used to spend a lot of time gardening, but in recent years, that has been put on hold  – first, with the loss of our home in the 2007 Witch Fire and the years it took to recover from that loss and more recently, while I attempt to manage family issues dealing with elder care.   So, I guess my vitamin D levels have suffered as a result.

I believe that we (my husband, Charlie, and I) eat a very well-rounded nutritionally-rich diet, but “getting all the bases covered” probably still isn’t happening without supplementation. Especially, calcium.  And, a quick online search revealed that there are “recommended” vitamins to enhance weight loss.  Who knew?

So, here is a link to the recommended vitamins to take to increase weight loss: Livestrong – What Vitamins Should I Take to Lose Weight?

And, here is a link to recommended vitamins that you should take even if you aren’t attempting to lose weight:  Livestrong – What Vitamins Should I Take Every Day.

Today’s Weight:  230.  Pounds lost this month:  0.  Total pounds lost since starting this weight loss journey:  33.

Why didn’t I lose any weight this month?  Not enough attention spent minding my P’s and Q’s (portions and quality).  And, still not exercising enough.  But, I’m not worried – I’m in this for the long haul and know that over time, I’ll lose this weight and get to a weight that’s appropriate for my height and age.

Tip of the Day:  Take vitamins.  Either a multi-vitamin supplement and/or individual vitamins based on your doctor’s recommendation.

Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie with Sunflower

The photo in this post is from my Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie recipe.  I chose it for  several reasons (all good):

  1. It has calcium in it from the whey protein powder.
  2. Since the recipe’s launch on my blog on July 3, 2013, it has brought 8,630 visitors to my site mainly from Pinterest.
  3. It has been pinned over 2,151 times!!!

I’m soooo excited about those stats!

P.S.  Please pin this to Pinterest and share on other social media sites.  Thanks so much!
