Do you ever look around your home or office and suddenly just have an overwhelming urge to purge?
This happens to me now and then, but quite often now since we moved into our new home less than two years ago.
Our previous home was larger. So it could be said that we “downsized”, but technically the only downsizing was in the square footage, bedrooms and garage space. Unfortunately, the urge to purge didn’t hit as hard before we moved.
I have since been in a battle with what to keep and what to save. I am always feeling overwhelmed with the amount of “stuff” we have. I have learned through this “downsizing” experience that less is in fact more and more just means that I have more to take care of, more to pick up, more to wash and more to find a “place” for.
More, more, more…Stuff, stuff, stuff!
It is exhausting!
I tried to follow Flylady. If you haven’t heard of Flylady, she is awesome and has some great ideas, I just haven’t been able to totally stick to it, although I have adopted some of her habits!
I even went as far as to join a virtual “bootcamp” to get organized at the start of the year, through Buttoned Up. This could have made a serious impact and been worth every penny, but as we all know, life happens. When I was in the beginning stages of Buttoned Up Bootcamp is when my Grandpa passed away and life was derailed for several weeks.
Yesterday I spent the day with a good friend and we were searching for a bed for her daughter. She hit the jackpot on Craigslist and found the perfect bed. This resulted in Happy Hour at her house and us giving her daughter’s room a total makeover. So fun.
The result: The Urge to Purge in my home. I want to live in less chaos. I want less to take care of in the way of “things”.
The perfect start…The Playroom!
I am always trying to redo the Playroom. I’m often scouring Pinterest for ideas of functional and cute Playrooms. In less than two years in our home the Playroom has had many setups and I am STILL trying to figure out how to make it work.
The answer: PURGE, PURGE, PURGE!!
With the help of my BFF we tackled the Playroom…almost. It’s a work in progress, but we got a lot out of there that is never played with and just creating clutter.
Next, a fresh coat of paint and only bringing things back into the room that are actually used and really loved!
Be sure to keep your eye open for future posts that will follow-up with the redo…I have/will have a lot of before and after pictures to share.
Have you ever had the Urge to Purge? Do you have any advice? I would love to hear about it in our comments!
Tootles,

I was getting bad for a while about keeping EVERYTHING…I am now trying to be more organized & part with some stuff. It MUST be a family trait lol

Haha…yes Nicole I think it’s a family trait for sure!!! I have to try really hard to not keep everything!
We are purging over here too. The goal it to get a 3 cars parked in the 3 car garage. Crazy thought huh? It should be easy since most of the purging will be my parent’s stuff. It will take a lot of muscle and time though. My relaxing weekend may not be what I had imagined.
It is quite a thought to actually park cars in a garage! We still have never been able to in this house!
I’ve been feeling the urge to purge lately too. Maybe it’s a post holiday thing. I’ve been looking around my rooms and they seem too “busy”. Anyway, the hardest part is figuring out what to part with. So many things hold memories and meaning. Oh well, it’s a good task to get me through the rest of winter (in between working of course).
Maybe you’re right about the post holiday season. I have such a hard time with deciding what to part with too. It’s difficult, but I think it’s a family trait to hold on to too much so I want to be sure to break that cycle. 😉
I know what you mean. I (for sure) don’t want to leave a mess for others to deal with.
Yes, we know all too well.
