This is a children’s story. But, I don’t have a book deal and no illustrator {frown}. I didn’t inherit my father’s artistic abilities, so, my photos of our swallows will have to do. Nest building update: 60 completed; 24 partial; pooped on once.
In a sweet peaceful valley in the wild, wild West
Swallows come to build their mud nests.
Up in the clouds, high in the sky
6,000 miles from Argentina they fly.
The middle of March scout swallows arrive
Finding the perfect spot for babies to thrive.
Leading the way for the rest of the flock
The scouts search the land and choose the best block.
No lights, no traffic, little noise and few trees
These are the key elements the scout swallow sees.
Year-after-year the swallows reprise this quest
Because the newborn babies deserve only the best.
First there are ten, then there are twenty
Coco the cat thinks that’s quite plenty.
But, no this is just the beginning, the start
Because this special valley is tattooed on their hearts.
Thirty, forty, fifty or more
In perfect swirling harmony they soar.
Spiraling, spinning, bobbing, fast as lightening they dive
Creating amazing mud nests so future babies survive.
Whirling and twirling at the speed of light
They flap their wings with all of their might.
Chattering their unique twittering chirp meant to cheer
The swallows are a gift to this earth so dear.
Working hard every Spring day with no rest
Building the very best nests in the West.
P.S. Today’s blog lesson: the reason for the duplicate text (text on the picture and text in quote box under picture) is because Google’s search engine spiders can’t read text on images. I liked the text on the image (I think it makes this seem more like a children’s book), so the way to maximize our search engine results is to include the text in the body of the post, too!

I love the story with photos; don’t think drawings would be as good,
