Aren’t these Sweetheart Maple and Sage Sausage Patties the cutest thing? Ever? Sometimes, I even impress myself! I have to tell you, though, that a high percentage of my recipe experiments don’t make the cut. In other words, I don’t (really, I don’t; I promise!) post everything I make on our blog! In fact, I’ve made two awful dinners recently (but more about that later – stay tuned). I mean, seriously awful.
So, when a new recipe comes together, one that is completely original to me and not a copycat that I got somewhere on-line or on Pinterest, I’m as proud as a peacock! And, this is one of those times!
Not only are my Sweetheart Maple and Sage Sausage Patties the cutest thing ever, they are delicious! The maple syrup shines through and the subtle flavor of the sage and other herbs is perfection! And, there’s a slight crunch factor to these patties because of the panko bread crumbs. A trifecta of ingredients – a clear winner!
And, what better way to start your Valentine’s Day then with a breakfast that includes edible hearts that aren’t chocolate?
After mixing the ingredients together, rather than trying to stuff the meat mixture into a heart-shaped cookie cutter, I flattened the ground sausage on a cutting board. I used my heart-shaped cookie cutter to punch them out, just like you do when you make cookies!
Then, using a spatula, I lifted them from the cutting board (do this gently or you may accidentally change the shape of your hearts) and put them in the frying pan. So easy!
I used a 3-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter and was able to get 12 Sweetheart Maple and Sage Sausage Patties out of one pound of ground sausage.
Served up on my beautiful white ceramic platter that has two little birds perched on the edge, then are the perfect complement to a Valentine’s Day morning breakfast. I got this adorable platter at Christmas time at Home Goods. I added a small pitcher of maple syrup, just in case anyone wanted to drizzle maple syrup on their Sweetheart Maple and Sage Sausage Patties!
Here’s a close-up of those adorable birds! And, here’s an added bonus: if you look closely, you can see me taking the picture reflected in the maple syrup pitcher! Fair warning to all those poachers thinking they are going to steal this photo and claim it as their’s – I’m it in! Good luck photo editing me out!
I love this serving fork! It’s made by a company called Mud Pie (I’ve written about them before; check out my post, The Sweet Life: A Candy Dish by Mud Pie). They have a website and you can find their adorable products in specialty retail stores.
In fact, I purchased this fork recently at our local hospital (yep; our Medical Center!) in their gift shop, which is run by CVS Pharmacy! My Mom was in the hospital and when she’s in the hospital, I’m a little depressed about it and I want her to feel better and I want to help her feel better. So, I went down to the lobby to the hospital gift shop to see what I could find. I bought her a teddy bear (she loves soft, cuddly teddy bears) and an orchid plant and me this Mud Pie fork!
And, guess what? We both feel better {grin}!
Here’s the recipe:
PrintSweetheart Maple and Sage Sausage Patties
These sausage patties are a delicious and easy way to start your Valentine’s Day!
- Prep Time: 10 mins
- Cook Time: 8 mins
- Total Time: 18 mins
- Yield: 12 1x
- Category: Breakfast
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground sausage
- 1 tablespoon fresh sage, leaves removed from stem and minced
- 1/4 teaspoon fresh thyme, leaves removed from stem and minced
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh tarragon, leaves removed from stem and minced
- 1/4 cup 100% pure maple syrup
- 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients by hand in a mixing bowl.
- Turn out mixture onto a cutting board (I used a plastic cutting board; if you use a wooden one, line the cutting board with wax paper so the patties don’t stick).
- Pat mixture to spread around cutting board (like a dough), until it is about 1/4 inch high.
- With a 3-inch heart-shaped cutter, punch out the heart-shaped patties.
- Using a thin spatula, carefully pick up the patties and transfer to non-stick skillet.
- Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes and then turn them over and cook other side about 3 minutes.
Notes
It is easier to remove the meat mixture surrounding the cut out heart, than to try and pick up the hearts with a spatula inside the mixture. So, lift the uncut meat from around the patty and place back in the bowl. Once you have transferred the first batch of hearts to the skillet, turn out the remaining mixture on your cutting board, flatten again with your hands and cut out the next batch. It’s like making cookies using a cookie cutter, only messier!
