“If you surrender to the wind, you can ride it.” – Toni Morrison
Tiffany took this photo on her iPhone at one of our local beaches. I love how this seagull is soaring over the surf so effortlessly searching. Searching for a place to land and forage? Searching for prey? Or just enjoying the experience…
And, I love Toni Morrison’s quote that I’ve selected to accompany this photo. She reminds us all that if we don’t fight against something, but open ourselves to the moment, to the experience, to the hardship facing us, the possibility of something extraordinary happening awaits.
This has happened to me more than once in my life. Just when I think the clouds can’t get any darker, the sunlight breaks through setting the course for a new and always better experience. At the time, I’m totally oblivious to the new and better experience and usually wallow in my misery. But, over time, the new experience that’s a direct result of the difficult experience I’ve endured, reveals itself and I think, “ahhh; so that’s why that happened. I get it now.”
Our house fire is an example. I thought we would never recover. We did. And, the recovery taught us so many things that I’m not sure, given the choice, I wouldn’t want to not go through it.
Because I’m a better person now. A stronger person.
You see, in every single one of life’s challenge, it has made me stronger emotionally. And, I’m grateful for the life lessons I endured, even though at the time I think my world has crumbled. Toni’s quote will remind me, when the next hurdle presents itself, to resist the temptation to fight, but surrender instead and live through the moment.
I’ve grateful for the winds of change. The lessons they teach, the new paths to journey and the people I meet along the way.
