Peach Pineapple Dump Cake with Walnuts is the best of both worlds – an insanely good, sinfully rich, delicious dessert that will blow your mind and one that couldn’t be simpler to make!

One of the easiest cake recipes of all time, making a dump cake doesn’t even require the use of a bowl!  In fact, it is so simple that even a three-year-old can make it (supervised, of course)!

The above photo collage is Princess Sweetie Pie making peach pineapple dump cake when she was three years old.  In the top photo, she is dumping the peach pie filling into the baking pan and the can of crushed pineapple is to her left.  In the bottom photo, she is dumping the cake mix over the canned fruit.  So cute, don’t you think?  Princess Sweetie Pie is my niece’s, Tiffany, youngest daughter which makes her my great-niece.  These photos were taken many years ago and she’s now about to turn 12!  My how time flies!

Similar to a cobbler, you make this simple dump cake recipe in a baking dish.  Plus, the only other tools you need are a spoon and a butter knife.  So, clean-up is super easy.

And, there are only 4 ingredients; sometimes just 3, depending on the flavor you decide to make.  For example, maybe you just want to make a peach one and leave out the pineapple.  Easy!  Just substitute the can of pineapple for another can of peach pie filling, add the cake mix and butter, etc.  Or, you can even substitute one of the peach pie fillings for a can of regular peaches in heavy syrup.  Doing so will make it slightly less sweet.

Do people really search for how to make a dump cake on the internet?  I guess they do if they’ve never made one before. Because there’s always a first time for everything and you want to make sure you’ve done everything right to guarantee your success.

I actually learned to make my first one, a similar recipe – an apple and cherry version, at a Tupperware party a zillion years ago.  The Tupperware dealer made it in one of their microwave dishes.  I was blown away and, of course, I bought the Tupperware microwave dish (good salesperson!).

While you can make this recipe in the microwave, I prefer making it in a 9″ x 13″ baking dish and baking it in the oven, because my current microwave is teeny, tiny and I can’t fit a baking dish in it – not even the one made by Tupperware!

How to Make a Dump Cake

Anyway, as a newbie making this fabulous dessert for the very first time, these are some of the questions I envision a newbie would ask:

  • Do I need a mixing bowl to make a dump cake?
  • Do I have enough pie filling for a dump cake?
  • Did I choose the right cake mix for this dump cake recipe?
  • Did I set the oven at the right temperature?

Well, to answer the first question, you don’t need a mixing bowl.  But, other than that, there’s really not a right answer to any of the questions above.  And, that’s the beauty of making a dump cake, aka dumpcake.  There isn’t a right way or a wrong way.

So, let’s take a moment and answer those questions!

Do I need a mixing bowl to make a dump cake?

No, you don’t need a mixing bowl.  You dump the fruit in the baking dish then cover it with cake mix.  Pats of butter are added on top of the cake mix, and voila, you are done!  You can, of course, sprinkle nuts on top as this particular recipe calls for.

Do I have enough pie filling for my dump cake?

For most dump cakes, you need two cans of fruit.  Most call for pie filling, but a few call for canned fruit.  And, here’s the beauty of dump cake – you can choose two different fruits!  For this recipe, I’ve substituted one of the cans of pie filling with a can of crushed pineapple, juice and all.  You can use cherry pie filling (2 cans) or one can of cherry pie filling and one can of apple pie filling.  So, there is a myriad of choices!  Blueberry pie filling, strawberry pie filling, blackberry pie filling, apple, peach, cherry – you can even use a berry medley pie filling!  Some come with less sugar, so you can save a few calories there.  And, if you created a mix of one can of pie filling with one can of fruit, you save a few more calories.

Did I choose the right cake mix for this dump cake recipe?

Actually, you can use just about any kind of cake mix – yellow, white, chocolate, strawberry – just match the flavor of cake mix to the flavors of fruit you are using.  For example, a good classic example is to pair a chocolate cake mix with cherry pie filling.  Other than that, it really doesn’t matter whether you use a yellow or white cake mix for this recipe; either works!

Did I set the oven at the right temperature?

Baking almost anything at 350 degrees Fahrenheit is usually a safe bet.  While this cake does take an hour in the oven, don’t be tempted to shorten the baking time by upping the temperature to 400 degrees.  You might burn it!  But, every oven is a little different, so if you don’t take my advice and turn up the temperature, be sure to check your dump cake at 30 minutes and then every 10 minutes thereafter.

After years of making this recipe over-and-over again, I’ve honed this recipe with a minor tweak:  I add a bit of water.  The typical dump cake will have patches of dry cake mix scattered about.  And, that’s okay, but it’s not the best “look” for a cake and it makes guests think it’s not done!  By sprinkling a bit of water over the cake mix before adding the walnuts and butter, you are virtually guaranteed NOT to have the dry cake mix scatter issue.  Instead, your cake will come out of the oven golden brown and oozing with fruity goodness!

I love this baking dish with the handles.  I got this one at World Market.  It isn’t actually a 9″ x 13″ baking dish but more of a deep dish-type measuring 12″ x 8″ x 2 1/2″ high.  And, having handles makes it easier to take out of the oven (you still need 2 hot pads, of course!).

Ingredients

Scale
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 20 ounce can crushed pineapple
  • 21 ounce can peach pie filling
  • 15.25 ounce to 18 ounces package classic yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 stick of butter (4 ounces), cut into 16 cubes
  • 6 cups vanilla ice cream (1/2 cup per serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Spray 9″ x 13″ baking dish with non-stick cooking spray; sprinkle with flour to coat.
  3. Open cans and pour pineapple (juice and all) and peach pie filling into prepared baking dish.
  4. Swirl the fruit with a spoon to combine, but don’t over mix.
  5. Pour dry cake mix evenly over top of fruit.
  6. Sprinkle water over the top of cake mix.
  7. Scatter walnuts on top of cake mix followed by cubes of butter, dotting them all over the dump cake.
  8. Set baking dish on a baking sheet (to prevent spills) and place in preheated oven.
  9. Bake for one hour and then check your cake; it should be golden brown and bubbly.
  10. Remove from oven and serve warm topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Every oven is different so this could take longer than one hour to bake. The “test” is that the cake is golden brown, with very little dry cake mix “patches” scattered about. The edges of your cake will be bubbly.

    Made this for a long time but I often use pecan cake mix with mine. Wow !!! It is ( according to almost every one who eats it ) awesome. Quite rich, but not something you forget. A perfect ending.

    I have a question. I have a freezer full of Boysenberries’s.
    I would love to use them. How can I tweek your recipe to make a Boysenberry dump cake?
    Also do you have a recipe for a no fail Boysenberry Cobbler?
    I can’t seem to get the crust right on mine! I prefer crust to toppings.

      Hi, Michelle! Unfortunately, I don’t have a recipe for a No Fail Boysenberry Cobbler, but I’ll put your idea on my list for a future post! As far as your freezer full of Boysenberries, I would take about 4 cups of those boysenberries, add them to a saucepan with about 1 1/2 cups of sugar and 1/2 cup of cornstarch. I would cook this mixture over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has melted and the boysenberries are slightly cooked and the mixture is juicy but not too liquidity. Then, I would follow the dump cake recipe substituting this mixture for the peach filling and the pineapple. I think it will be delicious, so if you decide to try it, let me know if it worked!
