I love this sign. It hangs on the gate to our backyard, pointing to another gate to our backyard. I bought this One Way or Another sign at an antique store in a rural mountain town (Santa Ysabel) near our home. I doubt it’s an “antique”; just a clever, modern sign made to look antique. But, it “spoke” to me on so many different levels:
Compromise
Not always is your way the better way; sometimes looking at someone else’s view can offer a new perspective.
Goals
If you don’t succeed at something as originally planned, regroup and try another way.
Determination
Part of the “goals” above; without determination, you may not achieve your goals. Often times in life, success is elusive because we quit trying.
Challenging Times
No one goes through life unscathed. Challenges present themselves along our life journey and how we handle those challenges can make or break us. But, when one way of handling a challenge doesn’t work, try another. And another. And another. Until you get through the challenge. And, ask for help. That’s the great thing about the human race – people want to help. Don’t be an island.
Family
This encompasses the “compromise” from above as well. Whether it’s a child, elder, sibling, aunt or a spouse, family can suck the life out of you. But, if one way of working through a family issue doesn’t work, try another.
Friends
Keeping in touch with friends can be an elusive struggle when your family life is full, overflowing, or exploding. But, friends are an important part of our mental health, so making time for friends, one way or another, is a must.
Cooking
I cook all the time. Sometimes three times a day! It’s a good thing that I like to cook. And, I like to experiment when I cook. I learned this from my father, who loved to cook, was an excellent cook and an adventurous cook. But, sometimes what I cook doesn’t turn out the way I envision. I’ve written about a few of my colossal failures and your can read them here:
- Of Messes in Pots
- Strawberry Cake
- The Leprechaun Cake Wreck Caper
- Brown Sugar Pineapple Ham: a Cautionary Tale of a Pinterest Failure
But, if I gave up because I’ve had some colossal failures, I wouldn’t have the great successes I’ve had with many, well-loved recipes! So, if one way of creating a new recipe doesn’t work, I try another.
The point is to try…
