Disclosure: I was sent a free copy of this book and asked to review it. All opinions are 100% my own.
When my niece, Samantha, was young, she had the bad habit of wandering off. It would happen in a split second – you’d turn your head for a moment to speak to someone else or glance down at your phone and, boom – she’d be gone.
It was a problem that required constant vigilance when you were with her because no amount of “coaching” seemed to get through to her. And, when it happened, my heart would jump up into my throat and I’d get a horrible knot in my stomach. I’m sure many of you have been there…
One of the scariest times for me was at Disneyland. I took her and her older sister, Tiffany, to Disneyland for a special day at the happiest place on earth. We were on Tom Sawyer’s Island, having a great time climbing all over things and suddenly, she was gone.
The good news was that we were on Tom Sawyer’s Island, so more than likely she was still somewhere on the island. And, she was – on the very tiptop of one of the large boulders. Another scary moment.
She had no conception of how she impacted the adults in her life. All she wanted to do was have fun. A sweet, loving girl with a learning disability (ADHD), for many years it was one event after another event after another.
But, when she got older, the light bulb finally came on. At 22, she no longer runs off {grin}.
Maybe the light bulb would have come on earlier if we’d been able to read her a book like Momma Don’t You Worry. And, maybe if she’d been able to read it on a device, like our phones or tablets, it would have had an impact on her and our “trials” as the adults in her life would have lessened.
In any case, I would have read Louie Lawent’s book to any of my nieces and nephews and encourage the older children read to it out loud to the younger children!
Written from the perspective of a 6-year-old boy, in a sing-song rhyming cadence, Momma Don’t You Worry tells the story about of a boy who feels he is too big to hold his mother’s hand when they are out together. She frets that he will run off. He tells her he won’t. In any case, while on a shopping trip, Mom turns her back and he wonders off, distracted by a toy store. When he suddenly realizes he’s lost, he remembers what is mother had taught him to do if he ever found himself in that situation and he’s reunited with his mom.
And, the story ends with the young boy “changing his tune” about mom holding his hand!
Sweetly illustrated, Momma Don’t You Worry is a cute story and a fast read with an important message; it is worth the $1.29 price, just to have it on your phone and other mobile devices as a constant reminder to your kids. Don’t you think it would be a good idea to have them read it out loud to you while on the way to a store?
Available at both Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
