Making a House a Home

Making a house a home is a very bold yet vague statement.  Everyone has a different idea of what feels right when it comes to decorating.  What factors determine your home decorating style?  There are so many possibilities when it comes to decorating, but personally the most important thing for me is that my house feels like a home.

My style has changed dramatically since the first time I moved out of my parents home into my first place.  I’ve had lots of inspiration and influence from people’s homes that I frequent, but what I have found most interesting since buying our current home is that this house has changed my decorating style and led me to a new-found appreciation for making old things new again.  I have decided that what best describes my current decorating passion is “Vintage Farmhouse”.

When we were looking for homes to buy this house popped out and made a lasting impression.  It was adorably decorated in an “Americana” theme.  While that was nowhere near my decorating style, I was truly smitten and feeling endless possibilities that have evolved over the past year and a half living here.

My hutch

This is a piece of furniture that I couldn’t live without and has been the foundation of the style that is throughout our home.

In the past couple years I have found myself looking at things with a different eye.  Things that at one time I may have not noticed or passed by thinking it looked “old” or “worn “I am now borderline obsessed with, now referring to them as “treasures”.  Often times I will look at a discarded piece at a garage sale or thrift shop and the phrase comes to mind, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure!”

How do you make your house a home?

Your home is very cute. For me, what makes a home “my home” is all the pictures and treasures that I like to display. Sometimes it’s quite a challenge to downsize them as I get more; but I love looking at them as I walk through the house. I just recently framed one of my grandmother when she was about three years old. So adorable, and so much history. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Dawn. Our house is really becoming my sanctuary, which I think is how it’s suppose to be. I love your house too. You have done a great job! Pictures and treasures make all the difference!
