The beginning of October is the best time to go in search of The Great Pumpkin! After all, Great Pumpkins, also known as Big Macs, are a limited commodity and if you want the most perfectly round Great Pumpkin that you can find, well you’d better start now!
And, you’d better take a man with you!
Every year, we try to head out for a day of fun in the sun at Bates Nut Farm. While the rest of the country might be experiencing a truly fall-like autumn day at the pumpkin patch, October is still hot in San Diego County. Most of the time, the temperature is well over 85 degrees.

On one of those beautiful, cloudless San Diego days, adventure called and we spent a day of fun-filled activity at Bates Nut Farm at the opening of their pumpkin patch. Not only did we pick out perfect pumpkins, but Princess P rode a pony, we went on a tractor hayride and we tackled the Straw Maze. Along the way, we saw old, restored tractors and steam engines on display, watched a tractor parade, played in the picnic area, enjoyed breathtaking sunflowers and giggled over silly scarecrows. There were scarecrows everywhere!
Bates Nut Farm, a San Diego County “institution” for more than 40 years, has fields and fields of pumpkins during the month of October. Here are a few:

Anyway, on this particular fall day a few years ago, we set out on our pumpkin pursuit…
Charlie and his team in pursuit of The Great Pumpkin – I told the girls to follow Uncle Charlie, so they did!
Princess Sweetie Pie (in pink t-shirt) is thinking:
Wow, so many beautiful, perfect pumpkins!
Hmmm…do I have to choose? Can’t I just sit here and enjoy them?
Maybe I’ll just pick that one!
No, there’s a better one over there!
Charlie watching over the pumpkin pickers; his scooter is like our pack mule: our lunch on the back, my camera equipment between his feet and snacks for the girls in his basket!
