Welcome! Are you working on your own home inventory project or wanting to start one? Whether as a proactive project to create a record of your personal belongings or as a reactive task for an insurance claim because of a catastrophic loss, bedrooms and bathrooms are a great place to start because they can be quite detailed, so getting them done will give you a great sense of accomplishment.
This section of the Lists of 42 includes 16 checklists all about bedrooms and bathrooms and the things that are usually in and around those areas of our homes.
You will notice that there are two separate checklists for your kids – one titled “Child” and the other title “Baby.” “Child” not only refers to your young children, but to your tweens and teens, too. Babies not only bring joy and happiness to families but come with their own unique paraphernalia. As such, it was impossible to keep the lists to 42 without delineating between these two.
In this section, you will find the following individual home inventory templates as respects your various bedrooms and bathrooms:
42 Things in Your Master Bedroom
42 Things in Your Master Bedroom Closet and Drawers

What Brought Me Here
In October 2007, we lost our home during a wildfire known as the Witch Fire. This catastrophic loss was a life-changing event in our lives and five years later, I wrote a series on this blog about our experience which you can read here: Any Way the Wind Blows.
We both had full-time jobs, so creating our home inventory for our homeowner’s insurance claim had to be done in our “spare time.” I’ve put “spare time” in quotes because when you’ve had a catastrophic event happen in your life, there is no “spare time.” Every small detail is enormous and takes time, for example, where are you sleeping tonight?
At the request of my insurance carrier, the house inventory list needed to be done on an excel spreadsheet and fortunately, I knew how to use Excel (Charlie didn’t). Clocking in at 165 separate excel spreadsheets rolled up into one excel workbook, it took me nine months of working nights and weekends to finish our home inventory list for our homeowner’s insurance claim.
We were lucky; we moved into our newly rebuilt home nine and a half months later. And, once we moved into our beautiful new home, it occurred to me that maybe it would behoove me to start a new home inventory because we didn’t have much stuff. And, since we didn’t have much stuff at the time, I thought it would be easier to do. So, compiling these lists of 42 started out as a personal whole-house inventory project of our new home.
Five years later in 2012, I launched this blog and decided to share my experience with my blog readers. And since I was “experienced,” having done a whole-house inventory for our personal insurance claim, it occurred to me that others may benefit from my experience. This led to the creation of what I call my “lists of 42.” These lists of 42 are checklists of numerous things in and around a house for home inventory purposes grouped together to total 42 in each space. Choosing 42 items to highlight on each checklist was a conscious decision to “brand” the “4 Two” in the name of my blog!
Also, by limiting the lists to 42, it makes a gigantic project easier by breaking it down into manageable bites. Using this home inventory template as a roadmap, you will master this massive project in less time as you work room-by-room through your house.
