Happy Thanksgiving 2012!

Happy Thanksgiving 2012

Happy Thanksgiving 2012

A photo-op in Boston.  This is on the Boston Tea Party Ship, so NOT the Mayflower II.  But, it’s the best I could do for a picture!  We went to Plymouth Plantation and saw the Mayflower II, so don’t know why we don’t have a picture (must be that darn “fire” thing!).  From left to right:  Tiffany, Gail being silly, Mom and Dad.  Anyway, I’m not in this picture because I took it.  Who knows where Charlie is???

And, here’s a brief Thanksgiving “primer”:

The Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving feast in the autumn of 1621.  They celebrated that first Thanksgiving to show gratitude for their survival, for their first harvest and to the Native Americans who befriended them and helped them in multiple ways including raising crops and hunting turkeys.  Over time, our current Thanksgiving holiday has morphed into a National Holiday commemorating that first feast and bringing family and friends together for a day of good food, reflection, fun and shared memories.

Here’s a Thanksgiving poem (that I didn’t write) to share:

The Pilgrims Came

(from “For Days and Days:  A Year Round Treasury of Child Verse” by Annette Wynne – 1919)

The Pilgrims came across the sea,

And never thought of you and me;

And yet it’s very strange the way

We think of them Thanksgiving Day.

We tell their story old and true

Of how they sailed across the blue,

And found a new land to be free

And built their homes quite near the sea.

Every child know well the tale

Of how they bravely turned the sail

And journeyed many a day and night,

To worship God as they thought right.

The people think that they were sad,

And grave; I’m sure that they were glad –

They made Thanksgiving Day – that’s fun –

We thank the Pilgrims every one!

Us visiting Boston in 1992.  This is the site of Plymouth Rock.  From left to right – Charlie, Gail (Tiffany’s mother and my sister), Tiffany, my mom and dad.  I’m not in the picture because I took it!

And, here’s a Thanksgiving quote:

“There is one day that is ours.  Thanksgiving Day is the one day that is purely American.” – O. Henry

Happy Thanksgiving from Carole and Tiffany!
