Happy Labor Day 2013! On Labor Day last year, I spent the day in ER with my beloved father. Prior to his death this past January, he had congestive heart failure for many, many years; off-and-on throughout his later years, he would have difficulty breathing as his lungs filled with fluid. Prudently, the assisted living facility where he lived would send him by ambulance to the hospital. They would call me and I’d meet them at the hospital. On that day, the doctors were able to stabilize his condition and he was released to go home.
Then, the next day, the assisted living facility sent my mother to the hospital via ambulance! She’d developed a severe infection and needed IV antibiotics to stabilize her. Again, she was treated and released to home.
The following day, the assisted living facility sent my father back to ER. His heart condition had worsened and this time, they admitted him to the hospital. To say life was crazy, busy that weekend is an understatement.
This Labor Day (2013), my mother is in the hospital. The photo of the flag above was taken from a window at the hospital during one of my visits to see my mom over these last couple of days.
Although not a life-threatening incident this time, my mother took a tumble a week ago, fracturing her wrist, gashing her head (requiring staples), lacerating her eyebrow (requiring glue) and getting a mother of a deep, horrible wound on her knee (requiring stitches). The doctor who stitched her up in ER said she had the “trifecta” of medical procedures in dealing with her lacerations!
While frail and fragile and still in the hospital, this recent hospitalization is nothing compared to what she and my father both went through last year (both almost dying twice) and I’m grateful to still have her with us. So, for me, this is a Happy Labor Day 2013!
So, whatever you and your loved ones are doing to celebrate this day, stay safe and stay out of the hospital!
P.S. I love you, Mom!
