Fred the Purr-minator looking at me with his sweet eyes as I write this post!
I’m sitting on the couch on a hot afternoon with Princess P. We are eating sandwiches and watching a show on Disney. I glance down to see a peaceful, obviously happy and secure cat sleeping in the middle of the living room. He’s enjoying the blanket that the girls and a couple of their friends had laid out for movie night.
Fred the Cat… Fred joined our family less than a year ago. I had been harassed by my family for a long time about adding a cat to our family. I always shut the suggestion down quickly, knowing that as much as I would love a kitty in the house, I would be the one caring for him. In my mind I didn’t need another mouth to feed or a litter box to clean. I was already maxed out with two pugs and two little girls!
I can’t remember how it happened, but in a moment of weakness they convinced me to head over to Petco as a family and look at the kittens that needed a home. I should have known that there was no way we would leave without a new member of the family.
There were about eight kittens that were up for adoption on this particular day. The girls, of course, wanted a girl kitty. We went into a small room with all the kittens to interact with them. Every one of those kittens shied away from the girls and were very scared, looking for a place to hide. All, except one boy kitten. He was playful, not at all scared and a purr machine!! His name was “Mooney”. Mooney had chosen us and we were all in love.
With his easy-going and loving personality he was very patient and tolerant with a two-year-old and four-year-old girl. It only took him a few days to figure out that the pugs were harmless.
Upon his arrival home he was gifted a new name…Fred. Princess P had her heart set on a female kitten until she met Fred. Why did she want a female kitten? My guess is so the kitten could have a pink collar and be named Daphne. Princess P has been a fan of Scooby-Doo since she was about two years old, always loving the character Daphne, even resulting in a Halloween costume of Daphne this past year. The only name that made perfect sense was “Fred” who is Daphne’s boyfriend in the Scooby-Doo series.
Fred the cat…Fred has added so much love to our family. Just when I thought our family was complete with two kids and two dogs, this little Freddy boy has proved me wrong. He is such a cool cat! Loving, trusting, full of personality and a purr machine who has added so much joy to each day.

He’s very cute! I often miss having a kitty until I get the itchy eyes from my allergies which have gotten worse lately. But I do like cats’ personalities. 🙂

Dawn-I was so opposed to having a cat. I’ve always had cats and loved them but just didn’t need another life to care for. He’s such a cool cat and keeps me company when I stay up late. I’m happy I’m not allergic to him!
