Do Better

Do Better cover

“Do the best you can until you know better.  Then, when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou

I love these photos of Princess Sweetie Pie.  At 4 years old, she’s always striving to do better.  But, I suppose, the drive to do better in a 4-year-old is part of human nature? After all, at that young age, new experiences are an everyday occurrence.  And, improving on that new experience is something we strive towards.

Like riding a bike – first time out, it’s not unusual for us to wobble around learning to balance as we madly peddle down the sidewalk, our mind feverishly working to connect with our body and establish a center of gravity. Sometimes, we fall over when learning to ride that bike.  But, we get up, dust ourselves off, get back on that bike and try again.  Until we master it.

We were at the Carlsbad Flower Fields a few weeks ago and both Princesses spied a play area with giant toadstools.  I was off traipsing about snapping photos of all the glorious flowers and had fallen behind our group, which included Princess Sweetie Pie, her older sister Princess P,  Tiffany (the Princesses P’s mom and my niece) and Patti (their grandmother).  I rounded a corner and rejoined the group just in time to snap these few photos of Princess Sweetie Pie attempting to climb on and master the toadstool mountain.  She was so earnest in her endeavor and oblivious to the camera…

She didn’t quite master the toadstool mountain that day, never able to pull her little body all the way up to a sitting position.  None of us could help her because we are all too short {grin}!  But, I bet the next time we visit The Flower Fields, she will. Because she’s just the type of personality that wants to try again when she has failed to master something.

Whether our journey through life presents learning experiences that are physical, mental, emotional or moral, I like to believe that as a race, all humans do our best and when we know better, that we do better.   Maya Angelou brilliantly breaks down the human journey in these two simple sentences, don’t you agree?
