Kitchen Hacks: Crushed Garlic Paste

Crushed Garlic Paste

Crushed Garlic Paste

Have you run across a recipe that requires Crushed Garlic Paste but don’t have any in your refrigerator?  Instead, you have a fresh head of garlic that you want to use?  Not sure that just chopping, mincing or dicing the garlic will give you the right consistency the recipe requires?  Here’s a simple way to make your own Crushed Garlic Paste for use in recipes.

Here’s what you do:

Garlic Cloves

Select a couple of garlic cloves from your head of garlic.

Smashed Garlic

Using a large knife, rest the knife over the garlic clove and give it a whack with the palm of your hand!

Smashed Peeled Garlic

After all garlic cloves have been whacked, remove the peels.

Minced Garlic

Mince the garlic cloves.  If you want to finely mince the garlic cloves, that fine too!

Salt on Garlic

Add salt.  This is between a quarter teaspoon and a half teaspoon.  I have a grinder full of sea salt crystals and gave that a couple of turns over the minced garlic.

Crushing Garlic

With the edge of your large knife set at a slice angle, crush, press and mix the minced garlic with the salt using your fist and some wrist action until you have achieved your desired consistency.

Set aside your freshly crushed garlic paste until ready to add to your recipe.  This is a cute little bowl I purchased from Princess House (this is NOT a paid post or advertisement; I happen to like Princess House and have hosted and been to quite a few parties over the years!).  This cute little bowl only measures 3 inches around and is great as an individual dipping bowl or for uses like this!

Remember:  you have added salt to the garlic in order to create this crushed garlic paste.  So, decrease the amount of salt in your recipe.  Happy smashing – a good way to relieve stress!
