The Backstory to My Own Extensive Home Inventory Undertaking
Compiling these lists of 42 started out as a personal whole-house inventory project for me. We lost our home during a wildfire, known as the Witch Fire, in October 2007, and it took me nine months of working nights and weekends to create a home inventory for our homeowner’s insurance claim.
Several years later, I decided to share the progress of my home inventory with my blog readers by creating what I call my “lists of 42.” These lists of 42 are lists of different things in and around a house for home inventory purposes bundled to a total of 42 in each space. Why 42? To “brand” the “4 Two” in the name of my blog, of course!
In addition to branding “42” because of “Toot Sweet 4 Two,” by limiting the lists to 42, it breaks a gigantic project down into manageable bites. By working your way through your home inventory room-by-room and space-by-space, using this home inventory template as a roadmap, you will master the project in less time.
Why Creating a Home Inventory is so Important
As Will said in his review of the eBook, a disaster can affect your life; that’s why it’s critical to be prepared. According to the Insurance Information Institute, knowing what you own makes things more efficient. Creating and keeping an up-to-date list of your possessions makes filing an insurance claim more manageable and more efficient. They noted that a home inventory list will help you with three key things:
- Purchase the right amount and type of insurance. As they asked in their post, “If you don’t know what you have, how can you insure it adequately?”
- Make filing a claim as simple as possible. As I came to find out, it’s hard to remember everything you own! It’s likely more than you realize.
- Provide evidence of financial losses for tax purposes or when applying for financial assistance. A well-documented and up-to-date home inventory list can be especially useful in this process.
