Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie is an easy, delicious and healthy way to start your morning.
Coffee and whey protein powder supply the energy and a serving of fruit, a frozen banana, makes it the perfect blender breakfast on a busy morning. Whether you are watching calories for weight loss or just need a quick breakfast with extra protein, this recipe delivers!
Here’s what you do:
If you don’t have leftover brewed coffee stashed in your refrigerator to make my Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie, brew a pot of coffee and allow it to cool, or make a single serving in your single serving coffee maker and allow it to cool. I always have leftover coffee because we make a full pot every morning and even though there are two of us, we don’t usually drink the entire pot. So, rather than throw it down the drain (always Channeling Amy!), I refrigerate my leftover coffee to use in cold coffee drinks. So, I don’t brew a pot of coffee and allow it to cool, because I already have leftover coffee! Whew! TMI!
Freeze a banana. I suppose you can substitute a fresh banana, but your Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie may not be as cold and frosty! Sometimes (more often than I care to admit), I buy too many bananas and they ripen before we eat them. I don’t like my bananas too mushy, so I stick the very ripe bananas in the freezer, just like the picture above. It doesn’t hurt the banana, but it does turn the banana peel brown, black or somewhere in between. Then, when I need a banana for a smoothie or for another baked treat (banana bread, banana muffins, etc.), I just take it out of the freezer!
They aren’t hard to peel, but they are very cold – in fact freezing cold {grin}, so work fast!
Chop the frozen banana into chunks.
Put about 12 ounces (1 1/2 cups) crushed ice in a blender. If you don’t have crushed ice, ice cubes will do. You’ll just have to process the smoothie a little longer.
Add the rest of the Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie’s ingredients: coffee, frozen banana, vanilla whey protein powder, ground flax-seed and chia seeds.
Here’s a close-up of the vanilla whey protein powder. This little scoop packs 27 grams of protein, so you will not be hungry until lunch!
Adding a pack of Stevia is purely optional. If you like your coffee on the sweet side, this will definitely satisfy that craving. I think using just the vanilla whey protein powder (which is sweeten) is plenty sweet enough!
Process on high until smooth.
Pour your Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie into a tall glass and enjoy! Delicious! Plus, with the added boost of coffee, it gets you going in the morning!
Here’s a close-up of this frosty concoction! I’ve garnished it with a sprig of mint, which is optional. Don’t you just love my blue swallow napkins? I couldn’t resist when I found these in a boutique. But, they only had four so I don’t use them often because when we have company, it’s rarely just 2 guests!
This Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie recipe makes about an 18 to 20 ounce drink. If you are generous, you could share this with someone in small glasses like these. But, if you are like me, you’ll drink the whole smoothie yourself! I did allow Charlie to taste-test it. He deemed it “tasty”!
I’ve included several different pictures so that you can choose which one(s) you want to save to your Pinterest boards. So, pin away my friends!
If you are on a diet, like me, this Coffee Banana Protein Smoothie is a great way to start your morning – delicious, refreshing, satisfying and packed with nutrition!

That coffee smoothie looks delicious. Pinning! I’m visiting from the Week-End Wind Down Party.
It is delish! I think you’ll like it as a change for breakfast, especially during hot summer months! Thanks for stopping by!
I love using frozen bananas! And I used to go through that horrid peeling process and my fingers would go numb. Recently, when I get home from grocery shopping, I peel about 8 bananas (or however many I need for the week), cut them in half and put them in little sandwich baggies and throw them in the freezer! It’s so much easier. When you need a frozen banana, you just grab a baggie and they’re all ready for the blender!

What a great idea, Tori! Leave it to me to do things the hard way! I’m using your method from now on. Thanks for sharing!
Love this smoothie idea! What is the calorie count?
So sorry, but I don’t include the calorie count in my recipes! However, it would be the calories of each ingredient, i.e., coffee = zero, banana = 105 (of course, that’s based on the size of your banana) plus the calorie count of the whey protein powder (that varies depending on brand used), ground flax seed (depending on brand) and chia seeds. With the brands I used, the total calorie count is 335. Thanks for dropping by!
Have you considered adding the peels? I’ve read they are good for you.

No, I haven’t. Intriguing idea…
They might be good for you, but banana peels are terribly bitter. I suppose it might be worth the extra nutrient boost if you’re willing to put up with the nasty taste.. It might ruin the flavor of this shake. but still like Carole said, it is something to consider.
Thanks, Rachel. I’ve never tasted banana peels (never wanted to!), but adding anything definitely alters the taste! Maybe more artificial sugar to counteract any bitterness of banana peels? But then, is adding more “artificial” anything worth the added benefit of the peels? More to consider…
Just tried this today and absolutely love it. Glad I found it

I’m so happy that you like it! And, happy, too, that you found our blog! Come back and visit again soon.
I never use the bananas fast enough either. I take take the skin off, break them into four or five chunks and throw them in a baggie. It saves a lot of work later when I use them for my smoothie.
Thanks, Wendy, for the excellent suggestion! I’ll start doing that – no more frozen fingers!
