UPDATE: Sadly, the Chicken Pie Diner in Poway, California closed its doors permanently in October 2013!
We (my family) are a force to reckon with when we go anywhere together, especially to a restaurant! That’s because my husband, Charlie, is handicapped and uses an electric scooter full-time, my mother uses a walker full-time that she insist she use as a chair, my father uses a wheelchair whenever he leaves his facility (stamina issues; he can stand and walk, but he can’t walk distances; plus he does not have the cognitive ability to use a scooter like Charlie’s). Then, when we add in a toddler or two needing a booster chair plus other elderly relatives with either walkers or wheelchairs, it’s “Katy Bar the Door” when the restaurants see us coming!
One time, I was the ONLY ambulatory (meaning on my own 2 legs without a walker) person in our bunch! Our party included me, my mother (walker), my aunt (walker), my cousin (wheelchair) and Charlie (scooter). WHEW!
As the only birthday in December in our family, Samantha’s (my niece, Tiffany’s sister and the Princesses P’s aunt) birthday can quickly become overshadowed by the onslaught of the holiday celebrations. So, we almost always go to a restaurant for her birthday to make it more “special.” Nothing fancy and she gets to choose.
This time, she chose the Chicken Pie Diner in Poway as the restaurant for her birthday celebration. A fixture in Poway (they’ve been there more than 20 years), I’d been there a few times before with friends, so I knew it was small. I was hesitant that we would all manage to fit in there with all of our contraptions, but what the heck – “it’s her birthday, we’re gonna have a good time!”
Wisely, they seated us in the center of the restaurant and it worked out just fine!
Above photo: Chicken Pie Diner Party – they seated us in the center of the restaurant with plenty of room for all of our “contraptions” (scooter, wheelchair and walker!). Do you like the “party hats” I added to my dad and Tiffany’s family? How about the mustache I gave Chris, Tiffany’s husband? And the chef’s hat I gave my dad (he’s the reason I love to cook). How about the rose I gave my mom? PicMonkey (free online photo editing) is so much fun and incredibly easy to use!
The service was great, the food was deliciously satisfying diner fare, the atmosphere casual and comfortable with a ’50’s vibe and, guess what? We had a really good time!
Milkshakes at the Chicken Pie Diner – I think we had about 7 different ones of the 18 different flavor in our party of 11! Amazingly delicious!
Here’s a link to their website: Chicken Pie Diner. Check it out – they have a video where they show how they make their chicken pies (ummmm, good!).
Oh, did I mention the food is really, really good? P.S. The food is really, really good!
