The painting above is street art, painted on the side of a gas station/car wash building in my nearby town. It’s huge – I’m guessing 30 feet by 40 feet! There are flowering bushes planted in front of it (far left and far right), lending it a three-dimensional quality.
I had a hard time photographing it because it sits right in front of the gas station part of the gas station/car wash combo. Cars coming and going, me standing in the middle of the entry area to the gas station bays, blocking traffic at a busy 4-way stop! So, working quickly, I couldn’t get a shot head-on and this was taken at a slight angle, thus the disproportionate quality of the photo.
In spite of my awkward photo, this tiger painted on the side of this building is quite glorious – a massive, powerful creature surrounded by a fanciful tropical jungle (Indonesia?) brimming with beautiful flowers and graceful birds. His sly, grinning face belying the dangerous creature he truly is. Who do you think he believes he is? I think he believes he is a testament to a universe of possibility.
In any case, I love the artist’s creativity and I love the fact that the gas station/car wash owner obviously actively supports community art by allowing this concrete building to be painted something other than concrete gray.
This tiger in his fantasy paradise reminded me of Narnia (even though the main character is a lion and not a tiger), so I thought this C.S. Lewis quote was fitting.
“We are what we believe we are.” – C. S. Lewis
