Please welcome guest contributor, Samantha, as she shares 5 Simple Road Trip Snacks for Families.
MFK Fisher said, “First, we eat; then we do everything else,” and how true this quote is… especially on a road trip. Everyone seems happier when they have something to munch on. And, for children, eating a snack can distract them from other issues.
Just because you are on a vacation does not mean that you have to spend loads of money on expensive, unhealthy snacks for your family. You can easily plan road trip snacks for your family to munch on that are not full of sugar and will not break the bank.
When planning a road trip, what are the best travel snacks for kids? Here are ideas for 5 Simple Road Trip Snacks for Families. #roadtrip Click To Tweet
Sandwich Roll-Ups
For meals while traveling, sandwich roll-ups are a great option. Your children will appreciate the variety from the regular sandwich look and will actually be interested in eating their meal. Tortillas are the best option for the outside because they are easy to roll. And, for the protein portion, peanut butter, turkey, ham and cheese are all wonderful choices. Before you depart on your road trip, spend some time making these by simply rolling up your protein choices in your tortilla. For younger children, you could slice them to make them bite-size.
Crackers
Crackers are food you can tailor to your family’s specific eating habits. You can add extras to your cracker selection such as peanut butter, cheese, Nutella, hummus, pimento cheese, chicken or tuna salad, and so on. Your children might also enjoy crackers such as goldfish, graham crackers, Cheese-It’s, or other similar products. Many of these items can be purchased in individualized pouches, or you can portion them out in individualized bags yourself to save money.
Trail Mix
Trail mix can be store-bought or homemade depending on your personal preference. Some terrific items to include in your trail mix are popcorn, dry cereal (Cheerios, oatmeal squares, etc.), dried fruits, chocolate (M&M’s, chocolate chips, etc.), sunflower seeds, and nuts (peanuts, almonds, pecans, etc.), but you can also add anything else your family enjoys.
Fruits and Veggies
Just because you are on vacation does not mean your family needs to skip their daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Many fruits and veggies can be purchased in pre-packaged pouches where they are already washed and sliced. And, you could bring along a cooler to store options such as orange slices, apple slices, celery, bananas and grapes. Many gas stations and convenience stores even sell fruit, and items like low-sugar fruit snacks and veggie straws are great alternatives to fresh fruit and vegetables. You can bring whatever your family’s favorite healthy selections are along for the journey so you are still able to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
Homemade Cookies
While you are making memories on your road trip, you should indulge your family with a cookie recipe that has been around for years. Use your favorite cookie recipe to remind your family of past family memories like Christmases, birthdays, or afternoons at grandmother’s house. And, if your children enjoy baking, involve them in the cookie-making process.
When you are traveling with your family, so many great options are available for road trip snacks. By taking the time to plan ahead, you can discover and make wonderful treats that your family will devour on your road trip. Pull out the snack bag and let’s get packing!
