[Updated June 14, 2020] 42 Toys and Things in Your Child’s Playroom is a continuation of the series about things in your house that are for your child or children or even grandchildren. Once you have that first child, something mysterious happens to a woman’s buying patterns. Suddenly it becomes all about that child and what the child needs and/or wants! So, before you know it, your home is overrun with things for your children!
If you are new to this series, welcome! But, if you are a new reader, you are probably already confused! What is this “42” thing all about?
I make lists of 42 things for household inventory purposes because I’m working on my own household inventory list for emergency preparedness and decided to share it on the blog as I work on it. And, if you are a regular reader of this blog, you will already know two things about me:
- I don’t have children
- I lost my home in a wildfire in 2007 (you can read about it here: Any Way the Wind Blows)
So, why have I included several lists of 42 about children’s belongings if I don’t have children? Well, you probably do and if you are utilizing my lists, you’d probably like to have ones that relate to children! And if you missed the earlier posts in the children’s part of the home inventory series of posts, I’ll make your life a little easier. Click on these links to get caught up:

That’s a lot of lists of 42!
Plus, many years ago I published 42 Ways to Help Your Child at School – this particular list of 42 was provided by my sister, Dawn, a now-retired elementary school principal and fellow blogger who writes about teaching elementary school over on her blog, Teacher Buddy Helps!
Are you wondering why I do lists of 42 and not 50 or 100? Well, many years ago I decided to try and “brand” my blog by choosing “42” because of the “4 Two” in my blog’s name, Toot Sweet 4 Two. Catchy, right?
Are you working on your own home inventory project, whether for personal use or as the result of a homeowner’s insurance claim? If you are working on one for a homeowner’s insurance claim, my heart goes out to you. It took me nine months of working nights and weekends to create our list to submit to our homeowner’s insurance company, so I know what you are embarking on and how overwhelmed you are feeling.
But here’s some good news – I’ve created an eBook to help you see it through. The Complete Book of Lists: Room-by-Room Checklists for Your Household Inventory Project combines the 55 lists on this blog plus 20 new lists and rolls them up into one eBook with 75 different home inventory checklists – all for the low price of $9.99! It’s a great tool to have on hand to help you through to completion of your household inventory project.

Please note: the list below is geared towards kids. For example, the link to “sofa, loveseat” takes you to kids’ sofas and loveseats. Lots of cute stuff via these links, so not only can you use this list to build your home inventory list and find the “replacement cost” of the items you lost, but you can also use this list to furnish a child’s playroom. A multi-use list!

One last thing – as I write this post, a dozen or more wildfires are raging throughout California. In Southern California, we’re experiencing extremely hot weather conditions (112 degrees at my house for the past 2 days), Santa Ana winds, and a hurricane off of Mexico that brought a heavy rainstorm to the southern border of our county. This heavy rainstorm left a path of downed, uprooted trees, trees struck by lightning, flooding in some areas, and power outages throughout the county. And that’s just the news from my neck of the woods!
Stay safe, stay cool, and stay prepared!
