[Updated June 9, 2020] Welcome to 42 Things in Your Master Bedroom Closet and Drawers – another list of household inventory items! For those of you new to my blog, I create lists of 42 (mainly household inventory items) in an attempt to work on my own household inventory (this post contains affiliate lists for your convenience. [convertkit]Okay, so here’s a funny story: a few days after we moved into our new home many years ago, I was unpacking my clothes and hanging them up in the master bedroom closet. I didn’t have a lot of clothes (yet) because we lived in a small, downtown condo while our new home was being built and I was doing my best to restrain myself from buying things that weren’t necessary so that when we did finally get to move back home, we wouldn’t have so much to pack, move and unpack.
Anyway, my new closet had the standard rod, with brackets for holding the rod, and those brackets were bolted into the closet wall into studs. My sister, Gail, had gifted me with those wonderful non-slip, velvety flocked, ultra-slim hangers – you know the ones – the ones invented by Joy Mangano and sold everywhere.
So, I was having a fine ol’ time, unpacking and hanging up my clothes and Charlie’s clothes in our new master bedroom closet. All done! Onto the next job…in another room…
A few hours later I hear this loud rumble followed by a deafening crash. I ran towards the sound, which was coming from our bedroom area. Looked around…nothing. I went into the master bathroom…nothing. Opened the master bedroom closet door and the entire rod, brackets, clothing and all had pulled out of the wall and crashed to the floor leaving a pile of clothes strewn everywhere!
I couldn’t fathom what had happened! After all, we really didn’t have that many clothes (really). Surely the contractor hadn’t attached the brackets right!
I called the contractor, who sent one of his guys right away, who explained to me that not only were these beautiful steel hangers heavier than normal hangers but because they were “ultra-slim”, they allowed you to put more clothes in the space than the rod was designed to hold!!! Anyway, he fixed it, reinforced it, and made sure my new closet rod would never come out of the wall again! All these years later, we are still good and I still use those hangers.
But you’d think I’d learned my lesson about over-filling, over-stacking, over-hanging stuff because this same kinda thing has happened to me twice before (I’m a slow learner)!
The first time it happened was 20+ years ago in our old house that burned to the ground in the wildfire (see Any Way the Wind Blows for the story). I had a small country-style kitchen and I thought a hanging pot rack would add ambiance and maximize storage space. Here’s a blurry photo of me in that old kitchen with the pot rack above my head:
Charlie and I found the perfect pot rack, spent a weekend installing it above our kitchen island, and added a slew of pots and pans. A few weeks later, in the middle of the night (we were sound asleep in bed) – CRASH! We thought someone had broken into our house and was destroying the kitchen! We grabbed a baseball bat and crept through the house, hearts pounding, only to find the kitchen a mess with the hanging pot rack on the island and pots and pans everywhere!
The second time it happened was at work. Our copy machine room had kitchen cabinetry installed for storage and over the copy machine was a kitchen cabinet. Well, you’ve probably already guessed what happened…
I decided it might be “smart” to store the copy machine paper in the cabinet hung above the copy machine. So, I loaded that sucker up with reams and reams of copy paper. Within a few hours – CRASH – and the entire office came running! Fortunately, the crash didn’t harm the heavy-duty copy machine, but my company had to hire a handyman to repair and replace the cabinet and we never stored paper in the cabinet again!
So, my advice on any type of closet storage items for your master bedroom closet or other closet is to make sure no matter what you are storing or hanging, that where you store it or hang it can support the weight. It’s only taken me three times to learn that lesson!

And here are some really adorable things in a bedroom dresser drawer:
I think it’s part of a cat’s purpose to want to be inside drawers. Not only to shower us with cuteness to make our hearts melt but just because they know it’ll make us pay attention to them because we have to pick them up to get them out! I know my cat, Coco, always wants to jump into any open drawer around our house and if I close the closet door in my photography room, he wails piteously until I come and open it! The funny thing is that it is crammed full of my photography supplies and there is nothing soft and cuddly for him in that closet, but for some reason, he can’t stand it when it is closed. I’m at his mercy…

It took me nine months of working nights and weekends to create our whole-house inventory for our insurance claim after the fire that destroyed our house in 2007. So, if you need to do a whole-house inventory for an insurance claim, my hope is that these lists will help you get started and move forward. Or, if you want to do a whole-house inventory just to have one should you need one, again these lists will help you reach your goal.
This post is full of pinnable images for Pinterest. I couldn’t decide which one to use for this post, so I made multiples and decided to use them all! After all, this particular closet space, while not truly realistic in the real world of master bedroom closets because it doesn’t have lots and lots of stuff in it, is certainly pretty!
