It’s hard to believe, but there are at least 42 things in your master bedroom! How do I know? In 2007, we lost our home in a wildfire (you can read about it here: Any Way the Wind Blows) and it took me 9 months, working nights and weekends, to create a personal property inventory list for our insurance company.
Welcome to 42 Things in Your Master Bedroom – another list of household inventory items. For those of you new to my blog, I create lists of 42 (mainly household inventory items) in an attempt to work on my own household inventory.
Thank goodness for the internet! Without the vast resources available at my fingertips, I can’t even imagine how much longer (than 9 months) it would have taken me to create that list. Because even though we think we will never forget a certain item, whether purchased, a gift, or a treasured heirloom, our memories are flawed and we do forget.

We’ve lived in our new home for many years now and it occurred to me a few years back that I hadn’t done an inventory of our new belongings. Nor had I taken one single picture of our belongings for inventory purposes. So, rather than be reactive (should another loss occur), I decided to be proactive and started working on this project.
And I decided to share these lists with readers in case you want to follow along with your own inventory project OR if you know someone who has suffered a catastrophic loss and could use these lists.
In any case, I can’t believe I’ve been making these lists for several years now! Whew! I have over 50 on this blog and I don’t think I’m even halfway there!
Here’s a photo of one of the 42 things in our master bedroom:
This is Coco, our beloved, cherished, treasured Snowshoe Siamese cat. He’s a boy, a boy cat named Coco (there’s a story behind his name; click the link to read it plus you can Meet Coco here!). Anyway, he rarely sits on this chair in our master bedroom, although Coco himself is a fixture in our bedroom (I didn’t include him on the list, however).
This beautiful chair came from Home Goods. Yep, it is NOT a designer original (well, maybe it was and ended up at Home Goods). Several years ago, when furnishing our new house, I made a trip to see what discount treasures I could find. This chair was perfect and I snapped it up on the spot. After all, beautifully decorated master bedrooms are havens and I was determined to make our bedroom a sanctuary.
But let’s take a closer look at what’s in this corner of our bedroom (this post contains affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.):
If I back up a little, this is what you see in the above photo minus Coco, of course, from left to right:
- Drapes
- Occasional table
- Plant
- Plant container
- Ottoman (a smidgen)
- Chair
- Pillow
- Throw
- Window shades
- Floor Lamp
- Armoire
And the above list does not include what’s inside the armoire or on top of the armoire or over the window shades (a valance)! Imagine that – 11+ things in that small corner of the room…
I have some exciting news to share – I’ve taken all my 55 lists of 42, added 20 more, and wrapped them all up together in an eBook called The Complete Book of Lists: Room-by-Room Checklists for Your Household Inventory Project! You can purchase it for $9.99 through the link (it takes you to another section of this blog). If working on a whole house inventory, this eBook will help you tackle this massive project room-by-room so that you don’t forget to include items in and around your home.

Take a close look at this list above. The first 11 items are all related to the bed. And nine of those items are master bedroom linens alone! It’s truly amazing how many things you can stuff into a master suite between the bedroom decor, including the master bedroom furniture, and the master bedroom accessories!
Here’s a pinnable image for Pinterest. Will you do me a favor? Would you share my post on social media? Not only can you bookmark it for you to return again by pinning it to one of your Pinterest boards, but maybe this post would help others who’ve had a loss. Also, please share on other social media, too. Thanks so much!
I threw you a curveball, didn’t I? Sharing all these cute photos of Coco in our bedroom then suddenly a picture totally unrelated to Coco. I just couldn’t resist sharing these two pillows with you in the cozy bedroom in the photo above! Aren’t they the cutest? While I haven’t found the exact same ones – Hello There Handsome and Good Morning Gorgeous pillows – I did find a bunch of similar ones on Amazon! They say the same thing but are different designs. Do you know what I call that? Choices!
Are you ready for a shameless plug? My dad, who died in 2013, was a fabulous artist (I miss him every day; he was a great dad). His name was Chuck and he created many works of art throughout his lifetime – both paintings and sculptures. I rounded up several of his paintings, had them photographed, and now offer reproductions for sale on Great Big Canvas. My way of sharing his genius with the world. So, the following images are a few reproductions of his paintings in other beautiful master bedrooms. So, not only do you get to see some gorgeous master bedrooms to inspire you, you get a peek at my father’s artistry.
The painting in the beautiful rustic master bedroom above is called Wild Blue Yonder. It’s wild and free, full of movement and I can just visualize a jet bursting through the clouds breaching the sound barrier.
As a general rule, my father didn’t name his paintings. He didn’t want to limit the viewer’s imagination by giving them names. But I named them for him and I named this one Wild Blue Yonder because, well, it’s blue and because my dad was an Air Force pilot and art was just his hobby, not his career.
I named the glorious painting above Emerald City. Every time I look at it, I think of Dorothy walking down the yellow brick road with the Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion, and Toto in tow arriving at the gates of the Emerald City. To me, the other bursts of color represent Kansas (brown blotch upper left), Munchkin Land, the poppy fields, the witch’s castle, and the deep, dark forest. The story unfolds before my eyes.
Isn’t this bedroom beautifully dramatic? I love the navy blue walls and the pure white bed linens. I’ve named this painting Solar Flare; it’s the perfect foil for a deep, dark wall. Isn’t it fantastic? My dad painted mostly abstract paintings. He did a few landscapes but the one I owned was, sadly, destroyed in the wildfire in 2007.
I chose Great Big Canvas because I love the various options they have available. Not only can you order canvas prints in various sizes, but you can choose various framing options. They are beautifully packaged and shipped and they come complete with the hanging hardware including a mini level – so cute!
I know all this because, unfortunately, I do not own all of my father’s original paintings. I had to share his work (darn it!) with my siblings and other relatives and not hoard it all for myself. But, once I was able to get this going with Great Big Canvas, I ordered several of the ones I don’t own and they now hang in my home alongside several of the originals. And, unless I point out to visitors that some are reproductions, they don’t even realize it!
Can I give you a tip? If you do order one or more of my dad’s paintings and you choose to have them framed, choose the “floating” frame. My dad not only stretched his own canvases across handmade frames, but he framed the final finished painting in floating frames that he also made by hand. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just click on any of the links for these paintings, choose “Framed Canvas” from the choices on Great Big Canvas, then click on “Choose a Frame Type – Floating” to see the transformation.
That’s enough inspiration for now – I’ll share more of my father’s artwork in other fabulous spaces in future blog posts. But if you’d like to see a few in a living room setting, check out this post: 42 Things in Your Living Room, Family Room, and/or Great Room. And, one of his paintings is in this post: How to Create a Food Photography Home Studio on the Cheap.
Okay, I’ll leave you with one last beautiful bed because it’s really over the top!
So amazing and feminine! If you are the handy DIY sort, you could easily recreate this look. Just buy a white canopy bed and loads of flower garland and gauzy drapes and voila, instant romance!

Great list! I think our master bedroom doesn’t have almost half of the things listed on your list. Can you also list 42 things a children’s room must have?
