I’ve been at this for more than a year now; that is, making these lists of 42 household inventory items. And I’m finally up to lists for children! Crazy, I know, that it has taken me more than a year to get this far and create this list of 42 Things in Your Child’s Bedroom.
But here’s the thing – anytime you tackle a large, overwhelming project, such as a whole-house inventory, you risk the chance of burn-out if you don’t pace yourself. So, 41 lists later, it’s time to peek into the life of your child or children and discover how much stuff those little rays of sunshine have accumulated in their short lives!
If you are a new reader to this series, welcome! If you are a regular reader, welcome back!
[convertkit]A brief explanation of this series for new readers: we lost our home in a wildfire in 2007. You can read the story of our loss and recovery in a multi-post series starting here: Any Way the Wind Blows.
Anyway, we were not prepared – at all. So, 5 years after moving into our new home with all our new belongings, it occurred to me that “lightning could strike twice” and we’d be unprepared yet again! So, I started working on our own household inventory and decided to share it on my blog.
If you have to do your first whole-house inventory because you’ve suffered a loss as we did, how do you even start? Per our claims adjuster, you mentally walk into the room, look to your left, describe that by listing it on your excel spreadsheet. Then look to your right and do the same. If there is a closet, cabinet, or drawer, open the closet, cabinet, or drawer and describe the contents. Then look straight ahead and repeat the process. Next, mentally move further into the room and start the process again.
How many of these things do you need to include on your list? Per our claims adjuster, Kenny, you need to “list everything down to the last toothpick. If it’s not on the list, you don’t get paid for it.”
So, let’s take a practice run at this exercise using the beautiful child’s bedroom in the photo above moving from left to right. Fair warning: I chose this photo because it has lots of stuff!

NOTE: the list below only includes the general category – “toys.” And it doesn’t include a list of things in your child’s closet and drawers. Nor does it include things in your child’s bathroom. For those lists, refer to these separate posts:

And, if you are, indeed, creating a whole-house inventory for personal use or for a homeowner’s insurance claim, you may need more than these four lists of child’s bedroom, bathroom, closet & drawers, and playroom checklists. You may need an entire set of home inventory checklists to help you reach your goal. And guess what? I’ve gathered up all 55 of my lists of 42 plus added 20 more and bundled them up in one eBook – The Complete Book of Lists: Room-by-Room Checklists for Your Household Inventory Project – at the bargain price of $9.99 for all 75 checklists wrapped up into one book.

Do you need some inspiration for your child’s bedroom? Since the photos above are all of a more feminine-inspired room, here are a few different children’s bedrooms with boys in mind…
Isn’t this wild animal-themed children’s room too cute? And that bookshelf with the three drawer fronts with the bear, bunny, and beaver (or is that a gopher?) just amazing? Actually, this would be a cute girl’s bedroom, too, for the animal lover.
How cute is this whale-themed bedroom? I wonder if the hanging clouds are actually lights?
This cute bedroom not only has a teepee but a hidden play area under the bunk bed. Lots of choices for play in this room!
Here’s a pinnable image to pin to your Pinterest board. That way you can come back here again when you are ready to start your household inventory project. In fact, if you are, indeed, working on your household inventory, why don’t you make a dedicated board just for that and pin all the different lists of 42 from this blog onto your board for easy reference? Just a thought…
And if one pinnable image isn’t enough choices for you, here are two more!
