It’s hard to believe that you might have 42 personal products in your bathroom! After all, with that many products in our bathrooms, we could open our own drugstore! Well, at least a mini “pop-up” drugstore, don’t you think? (This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.)
When I was creating this list of 42 Personal Products in Your Bathroom, I seriously thought I would have to list everything separately. For example, lipstick, lip gloss, lip balm, etc. in order to get the coveted 42. But, after I got started, I had to lump things together so as not to exceed 42! Who knew?
If you are a new visitor to my blog, I create lists of 42 household inventory items. I’ve been working on my own personal home inventory project for a while now and decided to share it on the blog, just in case readers want to use my lists as a guide. I do this because we lost our home in a wildfire in 2007 (see my series of posts, starting with Any Way the Wind Blows) and it took me 9 months of working nights and weekends to finish our personal household inventory list to submit to our homeowner’s insurance carrier.
[convertkit]While I certainly don’t wish for “lightning to strike twice”, I thought I’d rather be pro-active in creating a new home inventory list. Part of the reason it took so long to do our home inventory after our loss is that we had no photographs (except for 5 done by a real estate appraiser just days before the fire – definitely an angel on our shoulder at that moment!) and even though relatives shared photos with us, all of those photos were in the “common areas” – the kitchen, dining room, living room – and none of any of the bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.
So, how do you even go about creating a whole-house inventory project for an insurance claim? To start with, if you’ve experienced a loss, ask your insurance adjuster. Every insurance company may have a different procedure on how they want you to do it. In our case, our insurance company wanted our personal property claim submitted on an Excel spreadsheet. And, per our adjuster, we were to list everything “down to the last toothpick.” If it wasn’t on the list, we didn’t get paid for it!
In our case, they didn’t want stuff lumped together like “personal products in the master bathroom – $500,” for example. Instead, they wanted each product listed, the date purchased, the purchase price, and the replacement cost. So, using the photo above as our “practice run,” what do you see? Starting from the top shelf, left to right, I see these things:
Top Shelf – unidentified bottle, makeup, 2 bottles of body wash, sunblock, cream soap, 2 bottles of hand sanitizer
Middle Shelf – shaving gel, spray deodorant, 2 bottles of shampoo, baby body powder, hair spray, hair color
Bottom Shelf – another box of hair color, lipstick, perfume, nail polish, 2 bottles of aftershave, toothpaste, hand cream, another can of spray deodorant, hair conditioner
Twenty-five things in this average size medicine cabinet!
Just look at this container full of makeup brushes in the photo above! I count nineteen brushes, but I’m sure there’s more hiding in there! And if you count the makeup in the cover photo at the top of the post, there are at least another nineteen products. And the photo with the blue drawers has thirteen different items including a washcloth. I’ve lost count already! Let’s see: 25+19+19+13 = 76! Oops! I forgot to include the makeup mirror and the vase of roses in the photo above! Oh, and the container that holds all the brushes; we are up to 79 personal products now just looking at those photos!
I could go on, showing you more photos and listing the things in the photo, but you get the picture (no pun intended)! Instead, I’ll just give you the list…

Wow, that’s pretty much triple of what we actually store in our bathroom. We only have a pair of shampoo and conditioner set, soap and a feminine wash. Most of these are stored somewhere else, and the majority are probably in our own rooms. Is it okay to store makeup inside the bathroom, I’m never sure if it’s moisture reticent or not?
Carole says
That’s a good question. Unfortunately, I don’ know. My initial thought is that with most modern bathroom ventilation, it’s probably okay? I store mine in a drawer in my bathroom and have never had any problem. But, I’m no expert! 🙂
