Let’s start with a confession – my lists of 42 household inventory items, starting in the kitchen, have grown so long that I’ve had to resort to an Excel Spreadsheet to manage them! By “manage them”, I mean to make sure I don’t duplicate items from list-to-list. It’s a good thing that I started putting these on an Excel Spreadsheet, because I DID find duplications! Rather than go back and redo things and move them around, I’ll just tell you:
-
I duplicated “Food Processor” on list #5 (42 Baking Essentials) and list #6 (42 Nice-to-Have Kitchen Supplies and Equipment)
-
I duplicated “Extra Deep Lasagna Pan” on list #3 (42 Cooking Essentials for a Well-stocked Kitchen) and list #11 (42 Nice-to-Have Kitchen Gadgets)
BTW – 42 More Nice-to-Have Kitchen Gadgets is the 12th list in this ongoing, never-ending series! What’s this all about? Well, we lost our home to a fire in 2007 and we had to complete a household inventory list to submit to our insurance company. That list took me 9 months to do! So, I’m kinda sorta passionate {neurotic} about emergency planning and preparedness and I write about it on this blog with some regular frequency!
BTW #2 – if you need an Emergency Planning Checklist or a First Aid Checklist, just click on these links to posts from last year that have FREE printables.
October (the month we lost our home) is the height of fire season in our neck of the woods (Southern California) and in June, I started working on our own household inventory and since I’m doing it for me, I decided to share it with our readers! My hope is that should a reader, or a friend of a reader, or a friend of a friend of a reader, ever need to create a household inventory list from scratch, they will use these lists as a starting point. And, another hope is that by sharing, readers will be more proactive on their own emergency planning and preparedness by at least taking interior photos of their homes and storing those pictures somewhere other than their homes. Because, dear sweet peeps, starting over and working on a claim as a result of a catastrophic disaster is an overwhelming task. The more prepared you are, the less overwhelmed you will be!
If you’ve missed the first 11 posts in this series, they are listed (with links) at the bottom of this post. And, at the end of this post, readers can link to a FREE printable list to print out and add to your household organization binder (or emergency planning binder). Which leads to my second confession: on past FREE printable lists, I have found some typos! What! Typos! Yep – typos. So, I’ve gone through and corrected them and reattached them to their appropriate post, so if you were one of the ones that found a typo, now you can go and reprint the updated list!
I’m going to take a minute to “speak” to the photo above. This is our Keurig coffeemaker, which we love, but don’t often use anymore (explanation for lack of use follows two paragraphs down). I’m using a picture of this coffeemaker and all the K-cup storage things I have to prove a point. As you can see in the photo above, we have a K-cup drawer and a K-cup carousel. But, it’s still not enough to store all of our K-cups! So, we have a K-cup basket, too!
For all of you readers that have K-cup coffee machines, you get it. You want to try all the different flavors, so you buy either a carton of mixed flavors or cartons of individual flavors and suddenly, you have K-cup overload! Kinda like the Tribbles from Star Trek fame (The Trouble with Tribbles episode, for those of you that haven’t a clue!).
The point is: just because I have one thing listed on these lists, that doesn’t mean you have one of those things. You may have 3 of those things (like I do, in this instance) or 10 of those things! When doing a household personal property list for an insurance claim, you might have to list all the different things. In our situation, we had to list each individual item, place a dollar value on that item and a purchase date on that item. Down to the last toothpick. Yep. Down to the last toothpick. Not on the list? Sorry, no moola!
So, why don’t we use our K-cup coffee maker very often? Money. As much coffee as we drink in a day (about 10 to 12 cups for the two of us), it was costing too much money. I know you can use those refillable little pods, but we are just too lazy {grin}. We just make a regular pot of coffee most mornings and save the Keurig for treats and special occasions.
