It’s 3 days to Valentine’s Day and I have another FREE printable for your honeybunch! I love this Valentine…it reminds me of my parents:
Love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay
Love isn’t Love ’til you give it away
These words were written by Oscar Hammerstein and are the reprise from the Rodgers and Hammerstein song, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” from the Sound of Music. My parents were just barely older than sixteen going on seventeen when they met…they were eighteen. And, they married at 20. They had a long, happy marriage (62 years) until my father passed away in January 2013.
Here’s the Valentine’s Day card I made for my Mom last year using a photo of them from when they first married (both 20):
Such a great photo – so 1950’s!
Here’s the thing that makes me a little (just a little) sad…
In order for Charlie and I to celebrate 62 years of marriage, Charlie will have to live to be 100 and I’ll have to live to 95 (Charlie and I were in our mid to late thirties when we met and married).
The truth in those simple lines…
Love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay
Love isn’t Love ’til you give it away
resonates, doesn’t it? What is Love if you haven’t given it to someone (a partner, family, friend), or something (like your pet) or a cause (freedom) or a passion (music, art, writing, skydiving) or a place (Yosemite, Paris, Ireland) or religious faith? Love is an inert concept until you give it away. And, most of the time, giving it away feels good, except, of course, those cases of unrequited love.
