15 Kitchen Update Ideas for 2020

Kitchens usually takes a beating, and it may need more frequent updates or repairs than the rest of your house. It is where you cook, prepare food, eat, and clean up after a meal.

Since being stuck at home either by choice or statewide COVID-19 “stay at home” orders, you might have thought about all of the ways you can renovate your home or switch things up. Before jumping into a project, make sure it’s safe and smart to do so!

Here are my 15 kitchen update ideas for 2020!

1. Use marble kitchen countertops

Updating your kitchen countertop to marble can be a substantial improvement for your kitchen. Marble is quite pleasing to look at, and it is easy to clean. It can effortlessly match any kitchen that needs to be updated. You don’t have to change everything in your kitchen to make it look better; sometimes, you just need to replace your countertop.

2. Install a kitchen larder

Not all kitchens have a default larder cupboard. If you don’t have one, this is probably a great time to get one. This kitchen larder serves the purpose of both the kitchen cupboard and the storage room. This means that it can store supplies that are more accessible to obtain within your kitchen. It can also help you organize your food stockpile, especially if you are a prepper.

3. Make your kitchen eco-friendly

If you want to update your kitchen, opt for eco-friendly materials such as wood, bamboo, and recycled materials that aren’t harmful to you and the environment. Environment-friendly options are the latest trend, not only because they look great by providing natural wood tones, but also because they’re beneficial for the environment, too.

4. Renew your kitchen wallpaper

If your kitchen is starting to look gloomy, you might just need to refresh your wallpaper to bring it back to its former glory. Kitchen wallpaper is easier than repainting your entire kitchen because it is easy to install and remove. It doesn’t need much time to dry, so you can immediately use your kitchen after installation.

5. Have secret compartments in your kitchen cabinet

Hidden compartments are often found in any high-end furniture store. But, you can also have one custom made for your kitchen. It is an excellent place to store your secret stash of goodies that you don’t readily share with anyone. Having secret compartments in your kitchen is a unique idea that you must try. As a bonus, you can utilize space that otherwise wouldn’t be used!

6. Start using open shelves

Your kitchen can have tons of cabinets and drawers with items hidden away from plain view. Sometimes, it makes it challenging to find specific things in your kitchen because of all these doors and covers. You may want to consider having open shelves in your kitchen to make it easier to find what you want. This modification is also a way to showcase your kitchen antiques, heirlooms, and other collectible kitchenware that look good in your kitchen. Open shelves are very accessible. It is a cheaper option to having new kitchen cabinets because it requires less building materials. But, you have to forget about your hidden shelves.

7. Decorate your kitchen ceilings

You might be very focused on beautifying your kitchen floor, walls, or cabinets, but the ceiling is part of your kitchen, too. The kitchen ceiling may also need to be updated once in a while to make your kitchen look stunning. You can search for a suitable kitchen ceiling decal that will match your ceiling’s paint job. This update is easy enough to DIY, so you can add your personal touch to your kitchen.

8. Use complementary color combinations

The color combination can make or break your kitchen. You have to be mindful of the colors that you incorporate. The main color and accents of your kitchen have to be complementary. Otherwise, your kitchen might be missing out on a relatively easy and cost-effective update, especially if you do it yourself. The wrong choice of colors can also emphasize dirt and flaws in your kitchen instead of hiding them.

9. Remove kitchen partitions

Kitchen partitions may be unnecessary in small spaces. You can remove kitchen partitions to make your kitchen look more spacious. This way, you can also save space and move more freely within your home. If you live in a small house, getting rid of the partitions can make you live more comfortably.

10. Decorate your pantry

The pantry is often a neglected part of your kitchen. Most people fail to decorate it according to the theme of the home. To make your kitchen more appealing, you can decorate your pantry based on your desired motif. Smaller changes like this can help in the process of renewing the look of your kitchen.

11. Update to a vintage kitchen look using repurposed or upcycled wooden pieces

If you want a timeless kitchen motif, you can use repurposed or upcycled wood to decorate your kitchen. The vintage kitchen motif never goes out of style since it is a classic. Your broken or well-loved wood furniture can give rise to upcycled kitchen furniture with a vintage look. You just have to be creative enough to visualize the potential of your available materials to redecorate your kitchen.

12. Make your kitchen floor darker

Light-colored kitchen themes are about to be a thing of the past. The dark kitchen floor is an emerging trend, and one of my favorite kitchen update ideas for 2020! It is easy to clean since it prevents and conceals stains. The kitchen is very prone to being dirty, and sometimes stubborn stains are tough to manage. A simple answer to this is a kitchen update to make your floor darker.

13. Make concealed handles on your kitchen cabinet

Kitchen cabinets usually have visible knobs for easy access. But, if you want a minimalistic design, you can go for drawers and cabinets that have concealed handles. There is just a groove for your fingers to grip on the kitchen cabinet doors and drawers. This design may also cost less since it requires less building materials. Brass and bronze handles can be costly if you opt for them. If you have existing kitchen cabinets and drawers, they can be modified to include this minimalistic design.

14. Incorporate a dark kitchen theme

Another emerging kitchen trend for 2020, dark kitchens! The dark kitchen theme is composed of dark-colored kitchen appliances and furniture. This design route has distinct advantages when it comes to stains and maintenance. But, you need near-perfect lighting to pull off this kitchen update successfully. This theme is not for everyone!

15. Upgrade to a smart kitchen

This kitchen upgrade is a technological one. The availability of smart kitchen appliances can make things in the kitchen a lot easier for you. Nearly everything will be automated, and you can sync your phone with some kitchen appliances for easy monitoring. Having a smart kitchen has its benefits, but if you are not tech-savvy, you will find out that this update has a learning curve. You can match your smart kitchen appliances with your kitchen motif for a more sophisticated look. Soon enough, your whole house will be ‘smart.’
