Recently, I read an article in the Costco Connection magazine about emergency preparedness. In that article, it lists 14 human needs, which they attribute to Arthur Bradley, the author of Handbook of Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family. I have not (yet) read this book, but I thought that sharing this list with readers was important, especially today, September 11th, the twelfth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack on our country.
14 Human Needs
- Food
- Water
- Shelter
- Light
- Heating/Cooling
- Air
- Sleep
- Hygiene
- Medicine
- Communications
- Electrical Power
- Financial Security
- Transportation
- Protection
This list of 14 Human Needs is a good way to jumpstart an emergency preparedness plan. Tackle each item, one-at-a-time, using other tools to help develop your emergency plan. Last year, on the 5th anniversary of the loss of our home in a wildfire, I created a FREE printable Emergency Planning Checklist. This checklist breaks down emergency planning into 12 projects to get your family started on emergency planning and preparedness.
September is National Preparedness Month. What better way to honor the victims of 9/11 than to start an emergency preparedness plan right now, this month? Besides links to my Emergency Planning Checklist and my lists of 42 household items (for inventory purposes), here are some links to other sites to help you get started:
- Ready.gov (FEMA’s site)
- American Red Cross
- ASPCA (have your planned for your pets?)
While it is impossible to prepare for all types of disasters, including catastrophic disasters, having a basic plan in place (i.e., designated meeting place if you are not together when a disaster occurs; alternative care plan for each family member including pets), could mean the difference between you and your family’s safety and well-being and not.
Disaster could strike at any time. Wouldn’t you rather have a plan than not?
In Remembrance…
Until Next Time,
